Kyocera and Tohoku University have integrated optical isolators directly onto silicon photonics ICs, according to Electronics Weekly. Optical isolators, which prevent unwanted light reflections from destabilising lasers, have been difficult to combine with standard silicon photonics manufacturing. On-chip integration could make optical transceivers and co-packaged optics more compact and reliable, a step of interest for data centre and telecommunications hardware makers.
