Google is using AI to mine historical flood details from news reports in 80 languages to train its Flood Hub forecasting model, which can predict urban flash flood risk up to 24 hours ahead. Critics note the approach has blind spots, since news coverage skews toward heavily reported events: a flooded city centre may generate dozens of reports while rural flooding goes undocumented.
