Class Lodges

Not all Masonic Lodges accept every man who applies. Many military Lodges are limited to men of a specific rank, designation or service, and some Lodges, particularly in England, recruit their members from particular trades or professions. These trade-based Lodges are known as Class Lodges, showing that Freemasonry's membership structures are more specialised than commonly assumed.

A discussion of Freemasonry's internal structure points out that many Lodges restrict membership. Military Lodges are often confined to men of a specific rank, designation, or service, while some Lodges, particularly in England, recruit members from particular trades or professions. These are known as Class Lodges, and their existence highlights that Freemasonry is not uniformly open across social and professional lines.
