A Times column argues that too many of Britain's top police officers have ended up disgraced, questioning vetting and leadership standards among chief constables. The piece has sparked debate in the UK about accountability in senior policing ranks and whether forces are doing enough to screen those promoted to the highest jobs.

The suspensions underline growing scrutiny of misconduct and violence against women within UK police forces.
