Chechen Republic

Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia's Chechen Republic, has been awarded the maroon beret, the highest distinction of Russian special forces units. The announcement is drawing attention because the award is traditionally given to servicemen who pass demanding physical and combat qualification tests, raising questions about the circumstances in which it was granted to a regional head widely associated with paramilitary formations active in the war in Ukraine.
