California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed legislation that would have given Native American tribes a greater role in state water decisions. Tribes had pushed for formal consultation rights in water management, arguing they have historically been excluded despite deep ties to the state's rivers and groundwater. The veto disappoints tribal leaders and their allies.
