A new open-source solver has been released that couples melt-pool physics with grain-scale microstructure modelling. The tool is aimed at researchers and engineers working on additive manufacturing, where the thermal conditions of the melt pool directly determine the microstructure and mechanical properties of printed metal parts. By combining both scales of simulation in one package, it could make prediction of material quality in metal 3D printing more accessible to labs without commercial software licences.
