Allulose, a rare sugar that is a conformational variant of fructose, has almost no physiological effect and does not raise blood sugar. The U.S. FDA exercises regulatory discretion so it need not be counted as added sugar on nutrition labels, even though it remains legally a sugar. That discrepancy between its legal status and labeling treatment has led to lawsuits over food labeling.
