climate refuges

New research reported by Smithsonian and Phys.org suggests that climate refuges — areas where conditions remain stable as the climate warms — could be central to restoring endangered amphibian populations. Scientists say identifying and protecting these refuges may give imperiled frogs, salamanders and other species a better chance of survival as habitats shift and diseases spread.

A newly published book argues that Northern Michigan could become a refuge for people seeking safer places to live as climate change intensifies elsewhere in the United States. Coverage from Great Lakes Echo and Lansing City Pulse highlights the book's exploration of the region's climate haven potential, including its water resources and relative insulation from extreme heat, wildfires and sea-level rise.
