In July 1985 the Space Shuttle Challenger suffered the failure of one of its three main engines during ascent, forcing the crew of mission STS-51-F to execute the first and only abort-to-orbit in shuttle history. The spacecraft reached a lower-than-planned but stable orbit, and the mission continued with its Spacelab research objectives despite the in-flight emergency.

Milt Windler, one of NASA's flight directors during the Apollo 13 crisis, has died, according to a report shared by Ars Technica. Windler was one of the four flight directors who guided the crippled spacecraft safely back to Earth in 1970, and later worked on the Space Shuttle program. Tributes are coming in from the space community, with colleagues and fans writing 'Godspeed' in his honor.
