In July 1985, Space Shuttle Challenger suffered the failure of one of its main engines during ascent, forcing the first and only Abort-to-Orbit in shuttle history. Despite the anomaly, the crew reached a lower-than-planned orbit and completed the Spacelab 2 science mission. The episode is being revisited as a notable example of mission control handling an in-flight emergency.
