Reports say Germany is being courted to join the GCAP future combat air system, the fighter programme grouping the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, after the Franco-German-Spanish SCAF project ran into trouble. The talks revive debate in France and Germany over the future of European combat aviation and industrial cooperation.

A climate commentary piece asks what happens when bears stop hibernating, linking changes in bear sleep patterns to warming conditions, with particular attention to Russia. Shorter or disrupted hibernation is framed as a visible sign of climate change with consequences for bear behaviour, survival and human-bear encounters. The item is being shared among readers following climate and environment news.

Researchers at Maynooth University have built a scaffolded DNA computer in which short DNA strands compete to attach along a long scaffold strand. Mismatched tiles are energetically unfavorable, so they detach and are replaced until the arrangement settles into the most stable configuration, a process that lets the molecular system compute through self-assembly.

A science explainer is drawing attention to the question of whether dark points in light, such as shadows or dark regions, can travel faster than light. The piece is tagged with physics and cosmos topics and is circulating among science readers. Such apparent faster-than-light motion typically involves shadow edges or phase effects rather than actual matter breaking the speed limit, and interest centres on how this counterintuitive physics works.

A history item is circulating claiming that the Knights Templar issued the first international "travellers' cheques" during the Middle Ages. The medieval military order, which grew wealthy protecting pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, reportedly allowed travellers to deposit funds in one location and withdraw them in another using letters of credit, a forerunner of modern banking instruments.

French defence circles are discussing claims that a sixth-generation combat aircraft could fly by 2029, tied to the SCAF (Future Combat Air System) programme overseen by the DGA procurement agency. The timeline is being shared widely among defence and aerospace observers, though officials have not confirmed such an accelerated date.

Openjobmetis Varese travel to Scafati in Serie A basketball, chasing their first away win at a venue they consider cursed. VareseNews previews the matchup, noting the club's poor record in Scafati as they look to build momentum in the league. Fans are following the fixture as a test of whether the team can finally break its losing run there.

Astronomy enthusiasts are comparing two red supergiants, Betelgeuse and WOH G64, asking which will go supernova first and which will be the brighter spectacle when it does. Betelgeuse, in our galaxy and visible to the naked eye, is widely expected to explode within tens of thousands of years, while the more distant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud remains far harder to observe.

French defense circles are discussing a 2029 timeline for a sixth-generation combat aircraft, linked to the Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (SCAF) programme overseen by France's procurement agency DGA. Supporters see the date as ambitious; skeptics question whether such a complex jet can realistically enter service that soon.

A new world population report is being circulated and discussed, with focus on how population trends connect to inequality, poverty and education. The report's findings are prompting readers to consider what global demographic shifts mean for development and social policy worldwide.

An article recounting how, 2,220 years ago, Roman women marched to overturn the Lex Oppia, a wartime law restricting women's fashion, jewellery and luxury goods. The piece highlights a rare early example of women's collective political action in ancient Rome, drawing comparisons with modern debates over dress codes and laws policing what women may wear.

A mouse study suggests the scaffold protein AKAP12 helps shield sperm production from damage caused by BPAF, a chemical endocrine disruptor used as a substitute for BPA in plastics. The findings point to a protective role for AKAP12 in testicular cells exposed to the compound, and may inform future research on fertility risks from endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Attention has turned to the 1969 Sino-Soviet border conflict, a short but serious war between China and the Soviet Union fought along the Ussuri River, notably at Zhenbao (Damansky) Island. The fighting killed hundreds and pushed the two communist powers to the brink of nuclear war before tensions eased. With Russia and China now close partners, the history of their past confrontation is drawing renewed interest.

A discussion is under way about which biological organisms would make the best candidates for humanity's first missions beyond the solar system, arguing that humans themselves are unlikely to be the first biological astronauts sent that far. The piece points to research on hardy life forms suited to long-duration interstellar conditions, prompting debate about what future deep-space exploration might actually look like.
