The average sea surface temperature in the Nino 3.4 region of the central Pacific has reached 29.822C, edging past the previous record of 29.815C set in 2015. Commenters warn the new record comes roughly two months earlier in the year than the 2015 one, suggesting ocean heating is still intensifying and could fuel a strong El Nino with global climate impacts.
