A new application for the .lan top-level domain has been submitted through ICANN's New gTLD Program, according to the application summary published on ICANN's portal. The application is now part of ICANN's evaluation process for new generic top-level domains. Discussion online centres on whether .lan, traditionally used informally for local networks, should become an officially delegated domain.

ICANN has announced the applications for the 2026 round of new generic top-level domains, the process that determines which new internet domain endings will be created next. The announcement marks a milestone in the expanded domain name program, with applicants competing to operate new registry suffixes alongside existing endings like .com and .org.
