ICANN

ICANN's 87th public meeting is underway in Bali, gathering the global internet community to discuss domain name system policy and internet governance. Attendees from around the world are taking part in sessions on the coordination of the internet's unique identifiers, with Indonesia hosting the multistakeholder gathering this week.

ICANN, the body that coordinates the internet's domain name system, has pledged to work faster and be more transparent in its operations. The commitment comes as the organisation faces ongoing criticism over slow policymaking and limited public visibility into its decision-making processes, though details of specific reforms remain sparse.

ICANN says it will move more quickly and be more transparent in how it governs the internet's domain name system. Its leadership also warned that artificial intelligence and shifting geopolitics are likely to create new governance challenges and threats, signalling that the body expects its coordination role to become harder in the years ahead.
