ICANN

A new application has been submitted to ICANN for the .lan top-level internet domain, filed under ICANN's New gTLD Program. If approved, .lan would join the expanding pool of generic top-level domains. Discussion online centers on what a .lan domain would be used for and who is behind the application.

ICANN has published the applications received for its 2026 round of new generic top-level domains, the system that manages internet address endings like .com or .org. The announcement opens a window into which companies and organizations are seeking to operate their own web domains. Observers are watching to see how many applications were submitted and what new domain extensions could emerge from the round.
