Five more police officers have been charged with misusing Flock Safety's automated license plate reader cameras, adding to a growing list of similar misconduct cases. A 23-year-old woman, Lindsey Isaacs, testified that she spent 86 hours in solitary confinement after an automated license plate reader from Flock Safety connected her SUV to a fatal crash. Her case has sparked debate over how much weight police and courts should give automated surveillance data, and whether people can be jailed on such evidence before charges are properly tested.

The Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, a New York-based privacy group, is warning that Apple AirTags and Amazon Ring doorbells pose significant privacy threats similar to those of Flock safety cameras. S.T.O.P. communications director Will Owen said these devices come with myriad privacy risks, though he argued Flock's massive nationwide network of license plate readers constitutes a far larger dragnet. The comments add to ongoing debate over everyday consumer surveillance technology.

Flock Safety chief executive Rick Smith's home address was tagged as a public toilet on a popular online mapping service, in what observers see as an act of protest against the surveillance company. Flock Safety, which sells license plate recognition cameras to police and neighborhoods across the United States, has drawn criticism from privacy advocates.
