- 1Dante's Poem Behind Rodin's 'The Thinker'●The Surprising Origin Story of Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ If it weren't for a 14th-century poem, we would never have had one
Auguste Rodin's sculpture 'The Thinker', one of the most recognisable artworks in the world, owes its existence to Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem the Divine Comedy. Rodin originally conceived the figure as Dante contemplating his creation for a monumental set of gates depicting Hell, before the work took on a life of its own. The story is drawing fresh attention among art and literature readers.
