Image compression at 4bpp with extreme decompression speed
nibnib is an experimental Rust image compression format optimized for extremely fast decompression. It compresses images to 4 bits per pixel by storing per-pixel-pair delta values looked up from a palette; decoding just reads a byte and adds a palette entry to the previous pixel. It originated as an experiment for streaming images to DVI output on an RP2350 microcontroller.
Why now: It was featured in a Hacker News discussion, likely attracting attention as a novel, simple image format born from embedded microcontroller constraints.
Who it is for: Embedded developers needing to display images on resource-constrained microcontrollers, and graphics/codec enthusiasts interested in fast-decode formats.
